A New Vision for the Island's Cultural Landscape |
Wednesday, February 02, 2000 –Minister for Community Development, Local Government, Culture and Cooperatives Honourable Damian Greaves says he will work persistently to bring to reality the development of cultural art forms relevant to each respective community on the island. The minister was at the time addressing the Achievement Night for Babonneau’s Kalalou ’99. Kalalou ’99 was an initiative of the community of Babonneau, where community groups came together to display their various cultural talents. "This is my vision for the cultural landscape of Saint Lucia," said Greaves, "that every single community in Saint Lucia can, like Babonneau, develop certain things cultural which are peculiar to it and can look at it as a reflection of its persona." Minister Greaves says cultural initiatives manifest the level at which people can manage their communities and at the same time forge greater community bonds among residents. In commending the people of Babonneau Mr. Greaves emphasised the need for other communities to follow. "The idea, ladies and gentlemen, of a community festival which looks at the whole business of culture is to scout talent, old and new, to nurture that talent within the community which provides people with some level of pride and dignity in what they can produce and what they can, in fact, develop," Mr. Greaves ended. |
