Tuesday, July 11, 2000 - The Government of St. Lucia is continuing its thrust at developing the island’s human resources at the community level. Last weekend another Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) was opened in Saltibus, quarter of Choiseul, making it the fourth to be opened for this year.

Minister for Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and Labour Honorable Velon John who was deputizing for Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony at last Sunday’s opening said these HRDC’s serve as a focal point for wholesome activities, thereby helping to curb many of the social ills permeating society.

“Solidarity among the youth of a community is important because if that solidarity is not there, if that unity is not there, then you are divided and there is a lack of control throughout the entire community.  Then you have the problems with young people - the problems of drugs. This community centre can be a step in terms of resolving that problem, in that the youth of Saltibus can find a place where they can come together and be involved in meaningful activities that can contribute to the development of the constituency,” he said.

The Parliamentary Representative for Choiseul, Honourable Ferguson John,  reminded the residents of Saltibus that their appreciation for the building needs to be demonstrated in the maintenance of it and encouraged them to see it, not as government’s property, but as something that belongs to the people. “It is something that the people of this community must treat, kiss and caress like it is their own. That way we will ensure that the use to which it is put is the use that benefits the whole community.”

The centre will facilitate services such as a post –office, library and day-care. The facility is valued at over one million dollars and was jointly funded by the government of St. Lucia and the European Community STABEX Fund.
