St. Lucia to Pilot OECS Education M.I.S. |
Wednesday, February 02, 2000 – Saint Lucia has been chosen as the pilot site for the testing of the Education Management Information Systems (EMIS). The programme involves computerised training in student/teacher information systems to be implemented in the sub region. Through the programme, teachers will be able to assess better, education data using information and telecommunication technologies that are becoming increasingly available in the sub region. Education Specialist at the OECS Education Reform Unit, Mark Ernest explains that the testing is a major step in enhancing the education system for the entire OECS Region. "It’s a revolutionary way of doing things. We are now looking at collecting data from the school level via telephone lines into the Ministry of Education. Most of the data will be kept at the Ministry so when a principal wants information he would, at the press of a button, automatically be connected to the Ministry," Ernest said. A second such workshop has been planned for later this month and according to Ernest, principals would have the opportunity now to begin the data entry at the schools and begin to query the system . "At the other end, the Ministry can start making analyses of the school or an entire district, instantaneously. As soon as the training is over, principals can start doing their data entry," Ernest ended. |
