Standards Council To Execute Series Of Standard Seminars |
August 12, 1999 - The fulfilling its mandate to appraise consumers and suppliers of goods and services on existing and proposed standards, the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards, under the directive of the Saint Lucia Standards Council, will during the next five months mount a major public awareness campaign. This will take the form of a series of Standards Seminars, the first of which will take place on August 24, 1999. The August 24, 1999 seminar, "The Importance of Building Material Standards in the Construction Industry, with specific reference to hollow concrete blocks", is being organised in light of the recent amendment of the "Article 56" preferential trading agreement, which no longer protects hollow concrete blocks. The seminar is expected to be a medium to prepare the local concrete block manufacturers for the challenges of competition and liberalisation of the market. It will be attended by major stakeholders such as architects, engineers, block manufacturers, builder inspectors, and representatives of finance and insurance companies, technicians and representatives of Custom and Excise.
