St. Lucia is H.Q. for New CIDA Project |
Contact: Rose Marie Harris November 25, 1999 - Saint Lucia has been chosen as the headquarters for a new CIDA funded project. The project, the Caribbean Regional Human Resource Development Programme for Economic Competitiveness aims to strengthen the capacity of the Caribbean Region to compete in the global economy through Human Resource Development and Institutional Support. The programme has been designed based on a twelve month period of consultation across the Caribbean with governments, private sector companies and some Non governmental organisations (NGO’s). Project Manager, Melvin Edwards says "the project will assist economic sectors which have a chance to compete on their own, bearing in mind the global economy and the need for the Caribbean to stand on its own feet, if we are going to create wealth and survive the next phase of economic transformation." Saint Lucia he emphasised has been chosen because the island can boast of a well organised private sector. This, project according to Melvin will further assist members of that sector to take advantage of the many opportunities it will present and so advance its economic strategies. CPEC is being launched on Monday November 29, with Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony down to deliver the feature address. Other officials attending the launch will include a representative from the Canadian High Commission. |
