January 20, 1999 - Nobel Laureate Week will be observed here from January 18 –23 and a series of activities are planned to acknowledge the work and contribution of St. Lucia’s two Nobel Laureates. The programme is also designed to remind the public of the need to strive for excellence.

The week of activities commences on Monday January 18 with a formal opening by the Minister for Education the Hon. Mario Michel followed by two panel discussions in Vieux-Fort one on the work of Derek Walcott and the other on the work of Sir Arthur Lewis.

The activities continue on Tuesday evening with a piece on the early drama of Derek Walcott which will be done largely in Kweyol, and spearheaded by the theatre workshop from Soufriere. On that same evening there will be a lecture entitled "Science on the Cutting Eedge" by Dr. Millian Woodner tutor at the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. Dr. Woodner is expected to outline some of the things that are happening in the world of science and the implications for St. Lucia as a developing society.

Towards the end of the week’s programme there will be other lectures and presentations featuring various pieces by Derek Walcott. The week’s activities culminate on Friday with a wreathe laying ceremony on the tomb of Sir Arthur Lewis.
