Outgoing Chinese Ambassador Applauded by St. Lucian Government |
August 18, 1999 - The two-year tenure by the Chinese Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Gu Pine, has come to an end with glowing tribute from the islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. According to the Hon. George Odlum, Mr. Gu made a significant contribution to the overall development of Saint Lucia. "Mr. Gu, actually established the Chinese Mission in Saint Lucia and forged strong ties with people in the community." Mr. Odlum said. As the Ambassador gets ready to depart the shores of Saint Lucia in a couple of days, government officials are reminiscing Mr. Gus services to the island. One of the first projects undertaken by the Chinese Official was the establishment of a Free Trade Zone in the town of Vieux Fort, which should begin operations shortly. During one year of setting up relations with Saint Lucia, Mr. Gu also achieved the construction of some eleven large factories and one administrative building islandwide. Although Mr. Gus days are numbered, the construction of a Sports Stadium for Saint Lucia, has received his blessings, which will come on stream shortly. The Foreign Affairs Minister described the Chinese Ambassador as "matter of fact, direct but reliable." The government and people of Saint Lucia will show their appreciation to the ambassador during a formal reception. |
