Log Removal Project Comes on Stream |
Contact: John Emmanuel March 3, 1999 - The Department of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture will Wednesday March 3 launch its Log Removal Project aimed at cleaning up debris deposited at the Roseau and Anse La Raye Bays. According to Deputy Chief Fisheries Officer Vaughan Charles, the huge volume of debris felt over following the passage of Tropical Storm Debbie back in 1994, have created problems for fishermen in these communities. "Most of the fishermen in these areas engage in a type of fishing called beach seining, which requires that the sea bed be free of all obstructions such as logs and heavy pieces of metals which can snag nets. Due to debris felt over from Tropical Storm Debbie fishermen who depend so heavily on fishing activity in those bays are unable to drag their nets without difficulties and it’s a situation that must be remedied." Mr. Charles says all efforts on the part of the Fisheries Department to remove the logs had failed due to their size. Now that assistance has been source from the French Government, who is providing larger craft for the log removal project, a contract has been awarded to a local dredging company who will assist in the removal of the logs. The initiative is being launched tomorrow at a ceremony scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Anse La Raye Community Centre with addresses from Fisheries Minister the Hon. Cassius Elias, District Representative for the area the Hon. Cyprian Lansiquot and the French Ambassador His Excellence Claude Losguardi. Officers from the department of fisheries are supervising the work, with some assistance from the Soufriere Marine Management Area. |
