October 22, 1999 - The Department of Gender Relations is currently engaged in a sensitization programme to help minimize the incidents of Gender based violence.

The project "combating gender based violence" was developed in response to the increasing incidence of abuse in St. Lucia and the need to educate and sensitize the public on the negative impact of gender based on individuals and national development.

To date, Gender Relations Officers have met with the Crisis Center, health and social workers, and recently, member of the media, stressing that Gender based violence is not limited to physical but includes sexual and psychological harm and violence which is perpetrated or conducted by the state.

The Department of Gender Relations will be meeting also with community groups over the next few weeks in an effort to discuss ways to deal with gender based violence.

According to Gender Relations Officer Charms Gaspard recommendations will also be made for a comprehensive review of legislation pertaining to gender based violence.
