Women's Advisory Council |
Contact: Lucius Doxerie June 17, 1998 - The advancement of women and the achievement of equality between women and men, are matters of human rights and social justice. It is in this regard that a national advisory council for women has been established within the Ministry of Health, Family Affairs, Human Services and Gender Relations. Some of the issues that the committee will have to consider are the increasing burden of poverty on women and the lack of respect for and inadequate promotion and protection of the human rights of women on the island. The Chairperson of the National Advisory Council for Women, Laurina Primus leaves for Japan today where she will participate in a six week training programme. The programme will cover some 25 topics ranging from health to domestic violence. It will also seek to provide participants with an overview of strategies used by different countries to tackle issues pertaining to women. The committee has planned a retreat which is scheduled some time in July. |
