Contact: John Emmanuel

June 8, 1998 - The Castries City Council is currently in the process of having legislation drawn up, that would essentially give powers of arrest to city constables under its jurisdiction.

According to Mayor Irvin John, the measure is aimed at assisting Council is helping to keep the City clean. "Anybody found littering our city constables would be able to arrest or charge them for so doing," John told the GIS.

Presently litter wardens on the island are endowed with powers of arrest, but fall under the purview of the Ministry of Health.

Meantime the mayor says he’s pleased at the progress made since the launching of operation Restore Cleanliness in May of this year.

The City he says has taken on a different demeanor, with sanitation officials maintaining a higher level of vigilance, in ensuring that persons refrain from indiscriminate dumping of garbage.
