June 5, 1998 - June 5th is being observed as "World Environment Day." On the local front, the National Commission for UNESCO has organized a field trip to the Grande Anse beach. Some one hundred and fifty students from schools participating in the UNESCO Clubs and associated schools project are expected to participate in this activity where they will examine threats to the environment using Grande Anse as the case study.

During the field trips focus will be placed on the situation at Grande Anse beach in this International Year of the Ocean. The students will also be informed, educated and increase their awareness about the environmental problems and the need to preserve the marine environment.

Officials from the National Commission for UNESCO, Department of Fisheries and Forestry, Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development, St. Lucia National Trust and the parliamentary representative for Babonneau Hon. Kenneth John will all form part of the day’s activity.
