August 21, 1998 - Government will debate the Dissolution Bill of the St. Lucia Banana Growers Association next week, when the House of Assembly convenes next Tuesday. That’s according to the Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony, when he met with journalists at a press conference Thursday.

In his opening remarks the Prime Minister spoke on the performance of the banana industry and government’s plans to assist farmers. "We know nearly all the farmers are in debt, very serious debt," Dr. Anthony said. He revealed that as part of the program for re-capitalization, loans would be made available to farmers for inputs and labor for which they will have an 18-month grace period before beginning repayment. Loans will also be provided for drainage and irrigation, to which farmers will have 13-month before they commence payment and will be given up to 36 months for repayment. All loans will be made available at an interest rate of less than 5%.
