September 10, 1998 - Stakeholders in the tourism industry throughout the OECS are continuing in their efforts to make the industry a more viable and competitive one. The initiative is taking place through the development of a sustainable tourism strategy. Sustainable Tourism is becoming a major concern of the Caribbean countries and so the OECS member countries have drafted a strategy for its success. At a one-day consultation on Friday, carded for the Caribbees Hotel, organizers will undertake an analysis of the current regional and international trends in tourism, and examine national programmes and policies leading to a review of the main elements of the draft Strategy. The objectives of the OECS Sustainable Tourism Strategy include the development of a tourism industry that will be sustainable, internationally competitive and domestically viable. The strategy is aimed at ensuring that tourism in the sub region will provide an avenue for economically sustainable growth, environmental protection and cultural integrity. The consultation is organized by the OECS Natural Resources Management Unit-NRMU, the Ministry of Tourism and the St. Lucia tourist Board. |
