OECS Day Exhibition |
Contact: Richmond Felix June 18, 1998 - A two day exhibition which forms part of activities for the 17th Anniversary of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), was launched Thursday. The aim is to showcase the various departments, institutions and missions of the OECS Secretariat. The OECS was established to promote cooperation, unity and solidarity among member states, defend their territorial integrity and independence, assist in the realization of obligations and responsibilities, harmonize foreign policy, promote economic integration and pursue OECS goals through its respective institutions by discussion. In declaring the exhibition open, Prime Minister of St. Lucia the Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony said the responsibility is a great one, especially in respect of regional and international organizations. He expressed pleasure at the Secretariat's attempt to show its record of achievement and commencing the task of laying the foundation for important changes in the future. The Treaty of Basseterre which established the OECS, committed member countries to work together as one family. The current nine members are now looking seriously at expansion. An OECS publication has also been launched to familiarize the public with the role and work of the OECS. This year the Secretariat focussed on institutional strengthening and restructuring, recognizing the need to provide better service for member states. |
