OECS Day Celebrations |
Contact: John Emmanuel June 12, 1998 - The Secretariat of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States will next week, get an opportunity to review its work and activities over the last year, as its prepares to commemorate OECS Day 1998 on June 18. The occasion will mark the 17th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Basseterre, which established the OECS. Activities will focus on achievements of 1988, which saw the institutional strengthening and restructuring of the Organization. The exercise was carried out in recognition of the need to provide a better quality service to the member states and to enhance the overall efficiency of the Secretariats operations. Chairman of the OECS Authority the Hon. Lester Bird, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, is expected to join the rest of the staff of the Secretariat in commemoration this years anniversary, which will commence with an ecumenical service at the Castries Roman Catholic Cathedral at 7:30 a.m. on June 18. The event will also be attended by members of the St. Lucia Cabinet of ministers, the St. Lucian Christian Council and other members of the Diplomatic Corps. The celebrations will be held under the theme "OECS On The Move : Success Through Integration," and will include a two-day exhibition mounted at the Castries City Hall, comprising video presentations, information leaflets, newsletters, posters, photography, and short lectures. The aim is to showcase the work of the various departments, institutions and missions of the Secretariat. An OECS publication will also be launched at the exhibition. Director General of the OECS Swinburn Lestrade will deliver a message on OECS Day June 18, which will be aired on the Government Information Service Networks in all member countries of the OECS. The body is currently a nine member grouping comprising the 7 OECS countries and two additional members - the British Virgin Islands and Anguilla. |
