Hope for Anse La Raye Women |
August 17, 1998 - An initiative has gotten on the way to address the problems of unemployment among young women in the community of Anse La Raye. The Training Skills Program is aimed at educating participants in pregnancy prevention and providing them with some marketable skills to assist them in becoming empowered and have a more fulfilling and productive life. Bernadette Springer, Womens Affairs Officer in the Ministry for Gender Relations, is the coordinator for the training skills program. "We were concerned about the level of teen pregnancy and the general apathy among young female school leavers. We hope that the program will allow them to escape the cycle of poverty to which they are so vulnerable." The first phase of the project began early last year and the second phase is focused on fabric design, printing and other related skills. The one-week session caters for ten young women in the community and organizers are looking to follow up this basic course with some more advanced training. |
