Healthy Life for St. Lucian Youth |
Contact: Richmond Felix October 27, 1998 - Over the coming months, the Department of Youth and Sports will be instituting a number of new measures to foster open dialogue with young persons on issues confronting them. One of the new initiatives, which comes as a result of discussions held at the recently concluded Caribbean Youth Explosion, is a Healthy Lifestyles Program for young persons. The Department will be strengthening its links with young people at the ground level. In the past there has been a tendency to deal primarily with organized youth groups and organizations. It has now been realized that there is a dire need to focus on those who perhaps are most prone to problems. According to Director of Youth and Sports Armstrong Alexis, "Our emphasis in the coming month will be to work with young people who are unattached. Who are on the block liming. Who perhaps are the ones most at risk." In order to achieve its objective the department will be dispatching its Youth and Sports Officers into the various communities to have discussions with young people, with a view to find solutions to some of the common problems that they face. "Whether it be economic, social, emotional. Whatever the problems are. We intend through our Healthy Lifestyles Program, to address those issues in such a way that it is in sync with what is happening in the rest of the region," Alexis said. |
