Government Investigating Cracks at Boguis |
September 24, 1998 - Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Kenny D. Anthony and some members of the Cabinet of Ministers will visit the Boguis Community this afternoon to determine governments course of action in dealing with some unusual cracks in the ground. These cracks appeared to have widened in the past week and are becoming a source of concern for residents. Several engineers from the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities as well as a Geo Technical Engineer have visited the site (near the Boguis Health Centre) to determine the nature of these cracks and a report on the initial findings is being prepared. In the meantime the Prime Minister wants to apprise himself of the extent of the damage and the threat that it poses to the residents. Based on the findings, the Government of St. Lucia will determine the relevant course of action. The matter was brought to a head last weekend with the threat posed by Hurricane Georges. The expectation that heavy rains associated with the system would have adversely affected the existing cracks forced disaster preparedness officials to evacuate residents from the area on Sunday. Officials of the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Planning and the Office of Disaster Preparedness met this morning to formulate a plan of action which will take into account the possibility of having to evacuate the area in a very short space of time. |
