October 29, 1998 - The Government of St. Lucia and the National Council on Public Transportation have reached agreement on a number of issues after a series of consultations between the Council, Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Kenny D. Anthony, and Senator Calixte George, Minister for Communications, Works, Transport and Public Utilities.

As part of the agreement the parties have identified a mutually acceptable approach to the issuance of new route bands. Government has also agreed to extend a consumption tax concession of seventy-five cents per gallon for up to 500,000 gallons of gasoline purchased by the Cooperative=s membership, and a reduction of ten percent of the applicable consumption tax for the replacement of vehicles purchased through the Cooperative to be established by the National Council on Public Transportation.

The government hopes the agreement with the representatives of the National Council on Public Transportation will be signed on Friday next week, at which time a press conference will be held and other terms of the agreement made public.
