Dennery Fish Festival |
Contact: Primus Hutchinson June 4, 1998 - A wide cross section of residents from the Dennery village turned out last Sunday, to participate in the launching ceremony of the Dennery Fish Festival. The overall objective of the activity is to prepare the community for the challenges of the year - 2000. Villagers usually celebrate the feast of the patron saint of Fishermen, St. Peter during the month of June. Chairman of the Dennery Village Council, Orbert Regis says that he is optimistic of how the various activities will impact on Dennery. The value of the fisherman to society cannot be overemphasized and it is for this reason that Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Cass Elias, has stressed the importance of training, safety at sea and making fishing vessels readily available to fishermen at an affordable price. Mr. Elias also assures fishermen that his Ministry has already taken steps to ensure those needs are being addressed. According to one Dennery Fisherman, Christopher Joseph, "Fishermen should always be cognizant of the importance they hold to the community and this should serve as a driving force for them to become role models." The Dennery Fish Festival is the "Brain Child" of Parliamentary Representative and Minister of Community Development, Hon. Damian Greaves. He says that one of the principle reasons for organizing the Festival is to encourage organizers of community activities to move in the direction of portraying the talents and skills of the people of the community. Some of the activities planned for the month include: sports sessions, a cultural extravaganza, a gospel festival and a village fiesta. |
