By Richmond Felix September 3, 1998 - St. Lucias Minister for Culture, the Hon. Damian Greaves, will attend a meeting in Brazil from September 2 - 7, with several of his counterparts from Latin America and the Caribbean. The main focus of the meeting will be "Culture and Development. The objective is to promote a dynamic and effective exchange of ideas and experiences, which could serve as a basis for action and the strengthening of values. The Culture Ministers will also analyze the situation of culture in the region and its institutional framework - both Governmental and Private. Some of the issues down for discussion include: Cultural Patrimony, State and Civil Society Culture and Development, Culture and Citizenship Building, and Alternatives to Globalization. St. Lucia is well poised to offer a contribution especially since the Ministry of Culture has developed a draft policy for issues related to culture and its place in the development of the island. "Therefore we will be in a position along with our Caribbean colleagues to place our ideas and concerns on the agenda," said Culture Minister, Hon. Damian Greaves as he prepared to depart. Mr. Greaves also said that it is quite likely that the Caribbean Ministers will meet in cocas before the actual meeting with the Latin Americans, in order to achieve a position of unity on cultural issues relating to the Caribbean. The meeting of Culture Ministers is being co-sponsored by the Inter-American Bank and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. |
