Building on Regional Agriculture |
By Rose Marie Harris August 24, 1998 - Senior agricultural officials of the region begin a two-day workshop here. The 24 and 25 agriculture consultation is aimed at seeking ways of enhancing the agriculture sector of islands of the region. The Ministry of Agriculture is spearheading the consultation with assistance by CARDI and IICA. Through this gathering CARDI will get the opportunity to dialogue, exchange ideas and make recommendations on the appropriate operational structures of three new entities. CARDI has been given the mandate to coordinate agricultural research within the Caribbean. The primary role of CARDI is really to promote its new vision by certain operational instruments: the development of a Caribbean Agricultural Science and Technology System, the development of a Caribbean Agricultural Technological Assistance Service, a Centre for Agri-business Service and a Caribbean Information service Recommendations coming from the two-day meeting will assist agriculture officials to pave the way forward for the sector. Head of CARDI in Saint Lucia Lennox Daisley says, "CARDI being a regional agency has had consultations in other (Caribbean) islands. We are now looking to link up and see how best we can promote the regions agriculture." The Prime Minister is slated to be the main speaker at the opening ceremony, which will also feature presentations by the Minister of Agriculture and representatives of IICA and CARDI. |
