Another Crisis Centre |
By Janelle Charles September 1, 1998 - A second Crisis Center will open its doors this month in an effort to help address the socio-economic problems of women in Vieux Fort. The Southern based Crisis Center is in response to the high level of domestic and child abuse cases that are being reported by the St. Jude Hospital. According to the Coordinator of the Southern Womens Development Committee Mrs. Glendora Edwards the number of persons facing difficult circumstances in Vieux Fort demand a more structured response. "My telephone has been serving as a hotline for the past few years. Due to the calls Ive been receiving, I can say that theres a very big problem in the south," says Edwards. There is now a building in place and some personnel: a psychologist, two experienced councilors and peer councelers along with other voulenteers who have come together to establish the Crisis Center. The center will provide an avenue for conflict resolution, and will take pro-active measures to reduce incidences of child abuse, rape and domestic abuse. To ensure the continued operation of the center, the Southern Womens Development Committee will be seeking funding from international donor agencies and government. The group will also engage in fund raising activities the first of which is a show and dance secluded for next Saturday at the Annex in Vieux Fort. |
