Affordable Housing |
By John Emmanuel August 20, 1998 - The Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC) says infrastructural work is about ninety percent complete on its latest housing development in Beausejour, Gros Islet. The HUDC is inviting St. Lucians to view three model houses, that will form the basis for its latest multi-million dollar development in the north of the Island. The Beausejour Housing development in the quarter of Gros Islet, is the HUDC's latest attempt at arresting the chronic shortage in housing on the island. According to Joseph Alexander, General Manager of the HUD, "contracts have already been issued for twenty-four other houses, which are at various stages of development". The project, currently into phase one will see the construction of 60 houses. Phase two which will get underway shortly, will comprise an area of 35 arches subdivided into 240 lots, and will be less than a five minute drive from the phase one development. The houses are targeted at low and middle-income families. Alexander says for low income the qualifying criteria would be a salary of under fifteen thousand dollars per annum, with middle income ranging from fifteen to fifty thousand dollars per annum. The Corporation will in coming weeks aggressively market and advertise the project, inviting as many St. Lucia's as possible, to examine its new look development. |
