1st National Park for the Region |
August 24, 1998 - The Commonwealth of Dominica has established the islands Trois Piton National Park in Dominica as a world heritage site, the first in the entire Caribbean. The Government and People of Saint Lucia have extended warm congratulations to the Government and People of the Commonwealth of Dominica on the occasion of the inscription by UNESCO. We recognize that this is a rare achievement giving the fact that the Commonwealth of Dominica is the first Eastern Caribbean country to have a site inscribed and also the first island in the insular Caribbean to have a natural site included on the world heritage list. This achievement will undoubtedly augur well for the countries of the Caribbean region and will encourage other countries in the region to nominate sites that meet the criteria for inclusion on the world heritage list. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Ministry of External Affairs of the Commonwealth of Dominica the assurances of its highest consideration. |
