Friday 18 May 2012  The ”Protective Services Football Fiesta”  has been ushered into its second year on  Thursday, May 17th, with much praise going to the  level of camaraderie and interaction the event has engendered from its inception last year.

Minister for Legal Affairs, Home Affairs and National Security Philip Senator Honourable Phillip

La Cobiniere in making brief remarks noted that sports is integral to human development and by extension,  to the development of  the protective services sector which primarily covers, the police, the fire and emergency services, the prison  and SLASPA.

“Sports is always a very important aspect of human development and in fact in the Caribbean it holds a very special place because it is on the sporting fields of the Caribbean that many initiatives either by way of friendship or cultural connection was formed. For example if you look at the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s in the Caribbean you will note that sport had a very inter-island flavour. In those days it was really cricket, football and athletics.   Sports had a regional component which built friendships, it built an attachment and an understanding that we were not just each a country but part of a wider Caribbean.”

The 2011 inaugural “Protective Services Football Fiesta” was hailed a success with police emerging the victors. The 2012 football fiesta will kick off this June.
