Wednesday, March 07, 2012 – The much anticipated announcement of the new board of the Castries City Council (CCC) has been confirmed, with the appointment of Mrs Shirley Lewis as Chairperson along with a team of eight councillors.

The new board was sworn in on Friday March 2nd 2012 at the Mayor`s Office in Castries.

Mrs Lewis says despite expected challenges the new CCC board will rise to the occasion to efficiently execute its mandate.

“Much is expected of us and in our efforts we shall endeavour to make the surroundings and the city a more pleasant place to live and do business and put the CCC affairs on an even keel.  We shall call on our citizens and our commercial friends to assist us in making our city one to be proud of and one in which beauty, tidiness, peace and quiet reigns”.

In making the appointment the Minister for Social Transformation, Local Government and Community Empowerment Honourable Harold Dalson urged the new City Council board to improve the public image of the institution.

He also warned that corruption will not be tolerated and the CCC should operate within the ambits of the law.   “I expect nothing less from you but to be transparent, accountable and to restore the integrity of this institution, I beg that of you and I expect to get it because the image of the Castries City Council must be changed”.

Minister Dalson also announced that a request has been made for a one million dollar increase in the EC$2 million budget for the Castries City Council as compared to last year.

Once approved the increased budget will enhance the CCC`s ability to better carry out its work programme.
