Tuesday, March 20, 2012 – The Mocca Housing Development in Soufriere is progressing smoothly and will soon accommodate sixteen families from Fond St. Jacques who were displaced due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Tomas.
Construction of the houses began in September 2011, financed by a US$1 million grant from the Pinnacle Trust Company while the Government of Saint Lucia purchased the 7.5 acres of land for the project.
Member of Parliament for Soufriere/Fond St. Jacques Honourable Harold Dalson says upon completion, the development will complement government`s long term plan for the resettlement of affected Fond St. Jacques residents. “The report on the vulnerability of the Fond se Jacques has not been made public. We know the area is very vulnerable and as a government we would as much as possible like to encourage residents of Fond se Jacques who would like to start their family home to ensure that they select an appropriate location which is not in a vulnerable area so when we have heavy rains their houses will not be affected by landslides”.
The low cost houses at Mocca includes two bedrooms, an indoor bathroom and is being built to facilitate future upgrade by the home owners.
The MP says he is satisfied with the progress of the development. “The Mocca Housing Development is a project which was started by the former administration but we are committed to continuing it, the construction work is ongoing and pretty soon probably in the next couple of months these houses will be available for the residents to move in”.
The sixteen unit Mocca Housing Development consists of modern amenities including proper drainage and sewage systems.
The Member of Parliament says government will supplement the granting funding to ensure the completion of the project if required.
