FAO Meeting Focus on Agriculture and Food Security

Wednesday, March 28, 2012 – The many challenges faced by Latin America and the Caribbean regarding the issues of “Agriculture and Food Security” was the major subject discussed at the thirty second Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean. The meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina was held over a three day period – March 26th – 28th, 2012.
The meeting which is being described as extremely important, saw at both levels of policy makers – senior officials within the various Ministries of Agriculture and Ministers from around the region.
Saint Lucia was being represented by the Minister for Agriculture, Food Production, Fisheries and Rural Development as well as the Permanent Secretary in that Ministry.
During the Conference, governing representatives from all of FAO’s member countries also reviewed the actions undertaken by FAO during the previous biennial. The conference was the setting for an adoption of the regional priorities that the Organization will follow during the next two years.
Some of the issues discussed at the LARC meeting include FAO’s Work programme and Work Priorities for the Region, Food and Nutritional Security. These topics will initially be discussed at the Senior Officers Meeting, who will prepare a draft report for review, discussion and adoption by the Ministerial Session.
The FAO Regional Conference is held every two years and is the highest governing body and forum of the Organisation in the region. |
