Further Steps Being Taken to Combat the Black Sigatoka

Tuesday, February 07, 2012 – Saint Lucia’s Agriculture Minister Honourable Moses Jn Baptiste is exploring many possibilities to aid the island in combating the Black Sigatoka disease which continues to ravage the Agriculture Industry particularly the banana sector.
During an official visit to Costa Rica which is presently underway, the Minister will discuss with authorities, the Black Sigatoka disease which has been deemed a national crisis here and how local authorities can address the disease.
Press Secretary to Prime Minister Honourable Kenny Anthony, Jadia Jn Pierre Emmanuel notes that Costa Rica has had successes in combating the Black Saigatoka Disease which could be of benefit to Saint Lucia.
“We all know that in Saint Lucia, our agriculture sector particularly our bananas are being severely affected by the Black Sigatoka. Minister Jn Bapitiste has outlined some of the plans the government of Saint Lucia hopes to implement in the coming weeks to deal with this problem but as part of moving forward there will need to be consultation with our various partners in the region and this is one issue the Minister will be discussing while in Costa Rica and upon return to the island he will be giving a report to the public”.
Minister Jn Baptiste who also has responsibility for Fisheries, Food Production and Rural Development is in Costa Rica at the invitation of the Director General of the Inter American Institute for Corporation in Agriculture (IICA).
The Press Secretary says the Minister was invited to IICA`s Headquarters to discuss a number of pertinent agricultural issues.
Minister Jn Baptiste is accompanied by Mrs Una May Gordon IICA`s representative to Saint Lucia and Mr Kemwell Jn Bapitste the Chief Extension Officer in the Ministry of Agriculture,. During the visit the Honourable Minister will be meeting with the Director General and other senior staff at the IICA Headquarters, he will also pay a courtesy call on Costa Rica`s Agriculture Minister and visit various agricultural institutions including farms”.
Honourable Moses Jn Baptiste is scheduled to return to Saint Lucia on Wednesday February 8th, 2012. |
