Monday 30 May 2011 It is with deep regret and sorrow that the Government of Saint Lucia notes the passing of Sir Stanislaus James, GCSL, GCMG, OBE, former Governor General of Saint Lucia. Sir Stanislaus was the fourth Governor General of our nation and served for a period of approximately eight (8) years from 1988 to May 31st, 1996. Sir Stanislaus was born in the town of Soufriere on November 13th, 1919. He devoted many of his years in the field of education and assisted in giving direction to national education programme in the 1940s. In 1946 he became the first Saint Lucian to gain a diploma in Education through the College of Preceptors (ACP), London.

Sir Stanislaus also was a pioneer in the formulation of national initiatives in areas related to youth programs and community development. His efforts led to the formation of youth clubs, sports and community centres and playing fields island wide. He also made significant contributions as an architect of Government programs in a number of areas of social intervention. This led to the formation of entities such as the National Provident Fund Scheme, which is now referred to as the National Insurance Scheme.

Sir Stanislaus played a pivotal role in designing Saint Lucia’s first comprehensive National Disaster Plan. Sir Stanislaus should perhaps best be remembered as a key architect in the organization and development of Saint Lucia through his pioneering work which was instrumental in the establishment of programs and structures in the areas of education, youth and community development, social welfare and disaster preparedness. The Government of Saint Lucia expresses its deepest sympathies with the family and friends of Saint Lucia’s former Governor General, Sir Stanislaus James.

The public will be informed on arrangements for the State Funeral of Sir Stanislaus James following the conclusion of discussions with his family. Government has directed that the nation’s flag be flown half Mast with immediate effect on public buildings until the burial of former Governor General Sir Stanislaus James.
