Monday 24 January 2011  The Government of Saint Lucia congratulates Mrs. Mara Thompson, wife of the late Barbados Prime Minister, David Thompson on her historic victory at the January 20th, 2011 by-Election for the St.  John constituency made vacant after the death of her husband late last year.

“The Government and people of Saint Lucia express our pride in this achievement, which in itself epitomizes the spirit of regionalism.” Unquote.

Mrs. Thompson’s election by the constituents of St John demonstrates a level of maturity by the Barbadian electorate and an embrace of the ideals of regional unity, which was advocated by former Prime Ministers Owen Arthur and David Thompson. Mrs. Thompson’s election to the Parliament of Barbados in such a convincing manner symbolizes the historically close relationships between the people of Barbados and Saint Lucia.

We look forward with great expectation to the tenure of Mrs. Mara Thompson within the Parliament of Barbados. The advent of Mrs. Thompson within the political landscape of Barbados will no doubt serve to further cement the close ties between the people of our two countries and indeed to advance the goal of Caribbean unity. We are indeed one family, Barbados and Saint Lucia - the entire Caribbean. The Government and People of Saint Lucia salute Mrs. Mara Thompson as a proud Saint Lucian native, a proud Barbadian citizen, and a proud Caribbean woman.”
