Friday,  June 6, 2008 –  Young people from the community of Anse-La-Raye and two colleges from the United States are the beneficiaries of a recent cultural and artistic exchange.

The students visiting the island are from the Randolph and Lynchburg Colleges in Virginia. They participated in a three-day writing workshop this week with youth from the Anse-La-Raye community.

The workshop culminated on Tuesday with a performing arts event dubbed “Word Jam”.  Workshop facilitator Petronilla Deterville  gave some insight on the concept. “This initiative here tonight is the idea of students from Randolph and Lynchburg Colleges in Virginia. They visited Anse La Raye a few months ago and indicated that students from the colleges would like be involved in doing an activity in the area of the arts. They suggested something called Word Jam, and I said I think it would be a very good thing to do with the students because we have young people who are interested in writing.”

Youth of all ages showcased their original compositions of poems, songs, riddles, and skits during the event held at the community's Parish Centre.

Professor of Sociology at Randolph College, Brad Bullock explained how the idea came to fruition. “We were interested in doing a service learning trip; meaning we were interested in our students learning about St. Lucia by actually coming and interacting with the people themselves. We came early on, before we arrived with our students, to meet with various people to find out what was needed, and then we went back and we put some things together and brought our students here after a week of intensive study of Caribbean and St. Lucian politics, and the economy of St. Lucia.”

Both Deterville and Bullock conveyed their intent to establish a long standing collaboration to foster continued youth development. Bullock indicated his intent to return next summer with another group of students.
