Friday, December 7, 2007 – A 15-week Competitiveness Enhancement Programme for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) came to a successful culmination on Wednesday, December 05th with a graduation ceremony. At that exercise trainees were presented with certification and awards, much to the pride and gratification of the Office for Private Sector Relations, the OPSR.
The Organization devised, implemented and financed the Programmed called CLIMB, which stands for Cluster Linked Incubator Model for Business, in an attempt to motivate and support SMEs in developing viable business.
Director of the OPSR Jacqueline Emmanuel said a special feature of the programme was to reach out to rural districts, where more informal and start up businesses are found.
“To date we have 27 SME's graduating from this programme. One element of the package was that we taught them to be incorporated. They understood it was their decision, and they decided to get incorporated after being educated. We supported them and 22 of them have made that decision to transition from informal to formal,” said the OPSR Head.
The training comprised two groups—one in the north and the other in the South, with a focus on districts most affected by the decline in the banana industry. Following this successful outcome, Ms. Emmanuel said, the programme will again be held in 2008. |
