Thursday, November 11, 2004 - The Cultural Development Foundation is to add Music and Electronic Arts to the existing Visual, Theatre, and Literary arts categories when it hosts the St. Lucia Arts Festival next year.

The St. Lucia Arts Festival replaces the Minvielle and Chastanet Fine Arts Awards Scheme initiated some 25 years ago. The CDF is at present fine tuning its plans for the upcoming festival, which will now run for a period of 6 to 8 weeks from January to March.

Communications Officer at the Cultural Development Foundation, Dainea Augier said, “The objective of the festival is to showcase St. Lucian arts and culture, which is in keeping with the mandate of the CDF, and we want to place particular emphasis on original work, creative interpretation and artistic collaboration. The festival will promote the creative arts as an integral part of economic and social development of St. Lucian society”.

The festival will culminate with a gala evening at a date to be announced. Awards will be presented for literary, visual and electronic arts, as well as for the most outstanding works in each of the five competitive categories.

The St. Lucia Arts Festival also aims at extending employment opportunities for local artistes and services providers, by developing viable linkages between the cultural arts sector and the rest of the economy.

The festival will also incorporate a visual arts exhibition, competitions in contemporary and traditional dance, music, theatre arts, and drumming.
