Wednesday, July 18, 2001 – The Sulphur Springs in Soufriere, a unique St. Lucian resource recognized as the world’s only drive-in volcano, is benefiting from an EC$3.2 million development project aimed at enhancing the experience of visitors.

“The components include an interpretation centre where the visitor will be exposed to various exhibits at the Sulphur Springs, volcanoes in general, and the history of the Soufriere area,” explained Irving Alexis, Executive Director of the Soufriere Development Foundation which is managing the project.

He added: “There will be a service building that will include a restaurant and additional staff facilities. Then , we have additional trails and a vendor facility. We have additional car parking areas and a general enhancement in terms of landscaping for the enhancement of the Sulphur Springs area.”

The Government of Saint Lucia, recognising the importance of the Sulphur Springs, is providing basic infrastructure to ensure the proper development of the  resource as a tourist attraction.

Funding for the Sulphur Springs Enhancement Project is coming from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Soufriere Development Foundation.
