Thursday, March 01, 2012 – Twenty nine Saint Lucians were inducted into the Order of Saint Lucia on Sunday February 26th, 2012 marking the twenty seventh anniversary of the Independence Awards.

The awardees received various classes of honours for their contribution to national development in diverse fields.

Speaking in an interview with the GIS following the Investiture Ceremony Prime Minister Honourable Dr Kenny D Anthony noted that the award recipients are all deserving of special recognition.   “There is no better way to say thank you than to be here with them on the occasion of receiving these awards, I think every single person there were very well deserved.    They are formidable examples of each and every one of us and of course the younger generation and every now and then its good that the country can say thank you very much for what you have done and its appreciated and means a lot.   I am particularly anxious to see that many of those individuals who have provided our country with distinguished service are recognised in good time”.

The twenty nine awardees were inducted to the Order of Saint Lucia by the Governor General Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy acting on the advice of the Prime Minister who received nominations from the public.

Chairperson of the National Awards Committee McDonald Dixon says there is need for more deserving Saint Lucians to be nominated for the annual Independence Awards.    “At this juncture in our history when our nation needs all the skills it can sequester and more to overcome the raging tides of misfortune that seem to strike with high handed regularity-  some natural some manmade - and in the main not of our own doing,  let us continue to celebrate moments like these so that they become moments of inspiration to our young citizens spurring them on to greater heights which will redound in the future to the greater good and in general to the development of our country.   Again in this 33rd year of Independence we make the annual appeal to the public to continue to recommend deserving citizens in their communities to the membership of the Order of Saint Lucia.”

The Independence Awards has been a staple on the independence calendar since 1986.

It is hoped that the awards will inspire other citizens to continue making meaning contributions to national development.
