Monday, February 13, 2012 – Deputy Prime Minister Honourable Phillip J Pierre is in Haiti as part of a six member CARICOM delegation headed by the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Desi Bouterse, President of Suriname.

Minister Pierre is representing the government and people of Saint Lucia in the absence of Prime Minister Honourable Dr Kenny D Anthony who is overseas on official business.

The other members of the CARICOM delegation are the past chairman of the Caribbean Community, Dr Denzil Douglas, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis Caricom Secretary General Irwin LaRocque and the special representative of heads of government to Haiti, P.J. Patterson.

Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Jadia Jn Pierre Emmanuel explains the nature of the Haiti mission. “The purpose of the visit is to engage with the government of Haiti with respect to its priorities, which would assist in determining the nature of assistance required of the Community to that member state.  The visit offers the members of the Bureau of Heads of Government  to emphasise continued support for Haiti in its reconstruction and development efforts following the 2010 earthquake and explore ways for strengthening Haiti’s participation in CARICOM. “

While in Haiti Deputy Prime Minister Phillip J Pierre and other members of the CARICOM delegation are scheduled to meet with president of Haiti, Michel Martelly and Prime Minister, Garry Conille, and members of the Haitian cabinet.

The team will also meet with Haitian parliamentarians, the private sector, youth and the media. The two day mission concludes on February 14th, 2012.
