by: Claudia Monlouis Thursday, December 04, 2003 - When the Festival of Light celebrations take place on December 12, the spotlight will literally be placed on the youngest citizens of this country, the children. As reflected in the theme for this year’s celebrations; “Children – Illuminating the Way to a Brighter Future”, the event will pay tribute to the observance of 2003 to 2004 as “The Year of the Child”. Special Events Officer of the Cultural Development Foundation (CDF), Gandolph St.Claire says, the switching on of the lights, the headline activity at the Derek Walcott Square, will be carried out by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Kenny Anthony. “The evening of the 12th comes alive at 7 p.m. at the Derek Walcott Square where the lights will be switched on, perhaps an hour later. We have welcome remarks by the recently elected chairman of the Castries City Council, Peter Foster, and as we said, the emphasis will be on the youth, so there will be a huge display of lights by a large contingent of school kids. There will be remarks by the representative of Castries Central Honourable Sarah Flood-Beaubrun and Minister for Social Transformation, Honourable Menissa Rambally. Performances by the Lady Gordon Opportunity Centre will also refine the festival,” said St. Claire. The east coast community of Micoud will host this year’s Festival of Carols for the first time on December 7, 2003. The extravaganza will see a convergence of choirs and cultural presentations from communities around the island. The Festival of Carols and the Festival of Light will be held under the distinguished patronage of Her Excellency, Governor General, Dame Pearlette Louisy. |
