Virnet St. Omer-Fontenelle One of the features of this anniversary year was the national pledge competition. The successful submission has now become part of local broadcast programming as well as part of schools learning.
The national pledge being described as another symbol of Saint Lucia’s maturity as a nation was unveiled when the entry by Jeff "Pe’lay" Elva was accepted replacing the old and deficient one. Chairman of the Standing National Independence Anniversary Committee Dr James Fletcher says the pledge is the latest symbol of the islands growth which represents ideas about our own aspirations, ideals and thought processes. The pledge the author says came easily because it allowed him to put into words feelings he has always had for his country. Elva a 6 time calypso monarch, 2 time road march king and soca monarch is part of the winners circle, but, he says winning the pledge competition is his proudest achievement to date. He says it was better than any of the crowns he has won in close to three decades of singing calypso. The committee is hoping now, all of Saint Lucia will join in saying the pledge.
