by: Virnet St. Omer-Fontenelle Saint Lucia, February 03, 2004 - Gros-Islet and its satellite communities are preparing for independence with new features added to the annual celebration. For the 25th Anniversary year of Saint Lucia’s Independence the Gros-Islet Town Council and the independence committee have brought onboard schools for a solid waste management project. Member of the organising committee Miss Kimberly McPhee says it is the one activity which allows them this year to spread the programme out of Gros-Islet itself. She says the solid waste management project which started in November 2003 brings the resources of schools in the entire district to compete for the best concept in solid waste management under the theme contributing to the development of our community. The aim of the project Miss McPhee says will be the formulation of a plan which will provide the best possible interventions to get the public to commit to proper solid waste management practises. The Gros-Islet Town Council opens its first activity on February fourteenth with a fundraising Bar-B-Que and Dance at the Scouts Headquarters. On February eighteenth uniformed groups will take part in the retreat and parade at the Gros-Islet field from 5pm. On Independence Day the town will host an exhibition around entrepreneurship in Gros-Islet together with the customary fun sports which has characterised independence celebrations in Gros-Islet over the years.
