16 May 2009 EGYPT: A 3-year-old Egyptian boy has contracted the bird flu virus, bringing the country's number of human avian flu cases to 71, a Health Ministry spokesman said on Friday. The H5N1 virus was detected in the boy from the northern province of Al Gharbiyah after he came into contact with poultry, the spokesman said. The boy is currently in a stable condition and is receiving treatment.

16 May 2009 USA: Texas - Authorities in Texas confirm country's fifth fatality from influenza H1N1 The authorities on 14 May confirmed the death of a fifth person from influenza H1N1. The latest casualty had been in the coastal city of Corpus Christi in the southern state of Texas. The deceased, who was 33 year-old, died on 6 May, but the cause of his death was only ascertained on 14 May. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the District of Columbia plus 46 states, excluding only Alaska, Mississippi , West Virginia and Wyoming, have been hit by the virus; a total of 4,714 cases of H1N1 have been confirmed in the country to date.

 

16 May 2009 WHO: 36 countries have officially reported 8451 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection. Mexico has reported 2895 laboratory confirmed human cases of infection, including 66 deaths. The United States has reported 4714 laboratory confirmed human cases, including five deaths. Canada has reported 496 laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. Costa Rica has reported nine laboratory confirmed human cases, including one death. The following countries have reported laboratory confirmed cases with no deaths - Argentina (1), Australia (1), Austria (1), Belgium (2), Brazil (8), China (4), Colombia (11), Cuba (3), Denmark (1), Ecuador (1), El Salvador (4), Finland (2), France (14), Germany (14), Guatemala (3), Ireland (1), Israel (7), Italy (9), Japan (4), Netherlands (3), New Zealand (9), Norway (2), Panama (43), Peru (1), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Republic of Korea (3), Spain (100), Sweden (2), Switzerland (1), Thailand (2), and the United Kingdom (78).
