Saturday, January 24, 2004 –
Kaiso 25 is an
initiative of the Cultural Development Foundation in collaboration with the
Saint Lucia Calypso Association and the Independence Anniversary Committee.
Kaiso 25 will feature the twenty five (25) best Calypsos produced on Saint Lucia
since Independence, presented in one gala performance on Saturday February 7th
at the Pigeon Island Side Lawn.

An honourable mention of the late Lord
Carro was made for "Where do we go from here"
As projected by the CDF,
the show is proving to be one of the highlights of the 25th
Independence Anniversary celebrations. However, beyond the stellar event the
Kaiso 25 prospect has some major broader objectives.

Stimulating interest and respect
for the calypso art form throughout the calendar year, thus addressing the
perennial the complaint of calypso being seasonal.

Promoting National Pride and
consciousness through excellence in the arts, is central to the CDF’s
mandate. A well produced Kaiso 25 will go a long way towards restoring esteem
and confidence in Saint Lucia’s Cultural Productions.

Documentation is one of the weakest
areas is Cultural administrations. The disregard for total absence of
preservation has resulted in some precious works being completely lost.

Saint Lucia’s calypso has been
particularly hard hit by the destruction of archival material at the local
television and Radio Stations. Kaiso 25 will serve as a first step in ensuring
that the cream of Saint Lucia Calypso is well documented.

Cultural Industries have been
aggressively pursued and promoted by the CDF. The sale of Kaiso 25 CDF’s
video cassettes and DVD’s will stand as a brilliant example of the potential
and possibilities of Saint Lucia’s cultural industries.
Process
- A Research team was established to finalise
the criteria for selecting the 25 songs.
- A separate selection panel chose the final 25
using criteria from the Research Team.
- The public was invited to submit their own
list of 25 in email and the post. This definitely added to the hype in the
build up to the show.
- The 25 selections were announced two weeks
before the show.
- An All Star band comprising of the island’s
best musicians will provide the musical accompaniment.
- A leading Video Production house has been
contracted to produce the video of the event. The CDs and DVDs will be
produced by the best regional talent.
