Monday 11 October 2010  Parents and guardians of students attending the Dennery Primary and Infant Schools and the Clendon Mason Secondary School in Dennery are being advised that classes will resume on Wednesday October 13.

The institutions have been closed ever since flooding associated with torrential rains dumped piles of mud and debris across the  premises, last week.

The inclement weather also destroyed several school supplies and equipment.

Education Minister Honourable Arsene James says the ministry is confident that the schools will be properly cleaned and in ready condition in time for the resumption of classes.

“School will reopen on Wednesday October 13,2010 for the Dennery Infant, Dennery Primary and the Clendon Mason Secondary School, this will allow schools to be in a state of readiness in terms for the physical condition, disinfecting areas and also in ensuring that the over two hundred students on the school feeding programme are catered for. It will also ensure that the conditions at the homes of individual students and teachers are slightly improved.”

A high level delegation from the Ministry of Education including senior officials and technocrats  met with principals, teachers and other school officials last Friday to discuss the situation at the institutions.

Several contractors worked around the clock over the weekend to clean and disinfect the schools.

Minister James says trained and professional counsellors will be on hand when classes resume on Wednesday to speak to and provide moral support to students whose families were affected by the devastation.

“Students who lost uniforms are not expected to report to school in uniforms, counselling services will be provided and information on lost books and uniforms will be collected by every school principal. The Ministry of Education and Culture would like to thank individuals and groups in particular private contractors and crews, private trucking services and agencies, WASCO, the Ministry of Communications and Works, Transport and Public Utilities, the Saint Lucia Fire Service (Dennery Branch), and all other individuals and groups who contributed in ensuring that the schools are in a state of readiness.”

The Education Minister is encouraging parents and guardians to send their students to school despite other pressing domestic matters.
