Monday 22 November 2010  Poor solid waste disposal practises are responsible for some of the damaged Saint Lucia sustained during the passage of Hurricane Tomas and the recent inclement weather.  So says, Education and Public Information Manager of the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, Emlyn Jean.

“Based on just our field visit going into the communities and driving around, we notice that we have plastics again being thrown into our environment and even more so we would highlight the fact that we see more of these bottle water containers. We have to be very careful because these very plastics that we throw into the environment block the drains, get into our waterways—whether it be rivers and ravines –and these overflow their banks creating problems in the communities.”

The Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority encourages the public to adopt proper disposal practises especially as it pertains to plastics.  According to the Authority, the public should ensure that all plastics are stored and contained in garbage bags and bins, and eventually be taken to the Deglos sanitary landfill or the Vieux Fort Solid Waste Management Facility.
