Prime Minister King announces EC$500,000 to assist Dennery residents

Thursday, October 14, 2010 –  Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Honourable Stephenson King has announced that the Cabinet of Minister on Wednesday October 13, approved half a million ($500,000) to assist Dennery residents who were affected by the recent floods.

 

In making the pronouncement, the prime minister explained that the funds will be utilised to provide personal relief to the affected residents.  He also disclosed that government has already entered talks with various international institutions in the hope of providing additional relief and support to residents.

 

“We have already approached the World Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank and very soon we are hoping that some funds will be rolled out to assist with the physical relocation of affected residents and to conduct a number of mitigation measures as we continue to approach the Dennery devastation in a holistic manner to ensure that what happened recently does not reoccur.”

 

The Prime Minister says government has also agreed on a number of initiatives to provide both immediate and mid-term assistance to the affected residents.

 

According to Minister King Government will soon move to establish a central support fund outside the consolidated fund to coordinate the numerous offers of assistance from private sector partners.

 

“In response to numerous commitments from private sector agencies to provide the affected residents with appliances, furniture and other household equipment we have agreed to all these supplies will be given duty free status and also we have declared a period between now and December as a period during which time those affected residents who have families abroad who would like to send appliances, clothing and other relief supplies will be able to import these goods into the country absolutely duty free.”

 

Prime Minister King has also expressed his gratitude to residents, support agencies, and the general public for the manner in which they pulled together in response to the Dennery disaster.
