Tuesday 26 October 2010  Saint Lucian born cricketing all rounder Darren Sammy, who was recently appointed West Indies captain has been encouraging youth in Saint Lucia and across the Caribbean to take their education seriously.

The West Indies captain highlighted the importance of education at a special ceremony to mark his return to the country.

Sammy says it is critical that young people create a balance between sporting and educational development.

“I love going to the schools and I am very surprised to know that so many young kids recognise me when they see me. I will always encourage them to put education first because unlike me who devoted all my time and energy into cricket that might not work for everyone. My message to the youth is to put your education first and take it very seriously. It is also very critical that the parents play an important role.”

The West Indies captain who also pledged to be a positive role model for all young people. encourages the youth to desist from participating in crime and other delinquent behaviour.

Prime Minister Honourable Stephenson King is optimistic that the recent successes of Saint Lucia`s young athletes will positively inspire the nation’s youth.

“We must look to see how best we can use those sporting icons to further encourage our youth,  particularly at a time when we are grappling with the problems of indiscipline, crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour. We need to determine how individuals like Darren Sammy and Levern Spencer can inspire every child, every young man, and every young woman to have confidence in themselves and in their abilities and  to know that the sky is the limit despite their social or economic standing.”

The government of Saint Lucia hosted a special ceremony at the Beausejour Cricket Ground Tuesday evening in Sammy`s honour.

He is scheduled to leave the island today Wednesday October 27 to join a preparatory camp ahead of the Sri Lanka test match series which begin on November 15.
