More housing projects for Saint Lucia announced

Monday, May 3, 2010 Housing Minister Honourable Richard Frederick has provided an update on the status of several residential housing development projects under way throughout the island.

 

During his budget presentation, Minister Frederick stated that several housing projects have been completed while others are pending completion.

 

He revealed that the Marigot housing development project although delayed is developing smoothly and construction is at an advanced stage.

 

“Earthworks is 98 percent complete, drainage 92%, water reticulation 82% complete. In fact, the pipes have been pressure tested under WASCO's supervision and the National Housing Corporation (NHC) is in the process of awarding a contract for the installation of a one hundred thousand gallon water tank for the development. LUCELEC has been paid to provide electricity and as we speak work is ongoing.”

 

The Housing Minister also disclosed that his ministry has delivered on several projects, providing affordable housing for citizens in different parts of the country, including Garrand in Babonneau, and Cresslands and Quaylance in Soufriere.

 

He says during this financial year many more citizens will benefit from increased residential housing facilities.

 

“This year an allocation of EC$3 million has been set aside for the construction of more units in Cresslands and Quaylance where the condition under which some citizens live beg for intervention. Infrastructure works at Fond Mange and Morne d` Or are substantially complete, while we contemplate electrification of the Morne d` Or Development.”

 

Providing affordable public housing for all classes of citizens was listed as a priority area in the 2010/2011 national budget.

 

The island’s Prime Minster and Minister for Finance, Honourable Stephenson King, has disclosed that government intends to encourage greater involvement of the private sector to stimulate growth and generate employment in the construction sector through housing developments.
