Monday, May 3, 2010 Saint Lucia is prominently featured on biological diversity posters, produced by the United States Embassy of Port of Spain, in commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of Earth Day, and the observance of 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity.

The posters which were presented to the Director of Library Services Brenda Paul, by Matthew Casida, Public Affairs Officer at the United States Embassy of Port of Spain. Casida says a lot of effort went into ensuring that the posters were visually stunning, in order to appeal to students and the youth.

“We took several themes to really look at some of the uniqueness of Caribbean bio-diversity and so you will see we have one poster dealing with marine reefs, and other posters deal with corals, sponges and endemic birds of the islands. I believe there are over one hundred and sixty endemic birds in the Caribbean region alone.”

Bio-diversity co-ordinator Anita James says the local Earth Day theme “Greening Fair Helen”, focused on an individual commitment, and encourages the creation of a green economy that lifts people out of poverty, by creating millions of quality green jobs that do not harm nature.

“The United Nations has declared an international year of biodiversity to help us all—country and people—recognize the immense need to conserve the bio-diversity of the world because they function as a unit to provide essential services such as provision of food, water and medicines, regulation of temperature, climate and soil erosion and also to supply aesthetics.”

Meanwhile, Director of Library Services Brenda Paul says the donation of posters will go a long way in helping the public to appreciate bio-diversity, which is still an abstract concept.

The posters will be displayed at all seventeen libraries on the island.
